HTC One (M8) Offers Windows Phone 8.1

Mobile handset maker HTC revealed the HTC One (M8) for Windows, a new version of the company's flagship smartphone that uses Microsoft's Windows Phone 8.1 platform instead of Android. The device will be available this Tuesday on Verizon Wireless for $29.99 per month for customers on the Verizon Edge plan or for $99.99 with a new two-year contract (for a limited time).

The HTC One (M8) features a 5-inch Full HD IPS multi-touch screen backed by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 801 quad-core chip and 2 GB of RAM. The phone also comes with 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot for adding up to 128 GB of additional storage. The 2,600 mAh battery boasts up to 20 hours of talk time on 3G.

In addition, the phone also comes packed with a 4MP "Duo" camera on the back and a 5MP wide-angle camera on the front, dual-band Wireless AC and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, NFC, an accelerometer, a proximity sensor, an ambient light sensor, a gyro sensor and a barometer. There's also a microUSB 2.0 port that supports mobile high-definition link (MHL), which means that if the phone is plugged into an MHL-compatible HDTV, it will receive a charge while pumping audio and visual feeds to the big screen.

According to HTC, the phone sports an all-metal "unibody design" and a curved back so that it's easier to hold. The original HTC One (M8) shipped with Android 4.4 "KitKat," but this model ditches the robotic operating system for Microsoft's Windows Phone 8.1. The phone also includes the company's HTC BlinkFeed, BoomSound, Video Highlights, and more.

Both the Android and Windows Phone 8.1 models are covered under the HTC Advantage plan that will replace the cracked screen for free. HTC also promises "timely" software updates.

The Blackberry Z3 is a full-touch smartphone that flaunts a 5.0-inch capacitive display with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels and a density of 220 ppi. The Nokia XL was announced in a surprising manner at the 2014 edition of Mobile World Congress on 24 February 2014 which was held in Barcelona, Spain.

Reports suggested only a 4-inch touchscreen Android running Nokia X will be unveiled but Nokia also announced the 'Nokia X family' which was made up of Nokia X, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL.

Sony's Xperia M2 Aqua adds waterproof features

Sony on Tuesday introduced the Xperia M2 Aqua, a water-proof variant of the mid-range Xperia M2 smartphone. Expected to launch in the weeks ahead, the handset will be offered in select markets including Europe, Latin America, and Asia Pacific.

The main draw of the M2 Aqua, of course, is its dust-proof and waterproof capabilities. To that end, the smartphone can withstand being immersed in 1.5 meters of water for up to a half hour. And, thanks to the dedicated camera button, snapping underwater pictures is possible.

Otherwise, the hardware hasn't changed much from the standard version of the Xperia M2. Powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, the Xperia M2 Aqua boasts the same 4.8-inch 540x960 qHD display and 8-megapixel rear camera. Like its sibling, this one also packs 8GB internal storage, 1GB RAM, and a front-facing 1.2-megapixel shooter.

Switching over to software, the Android 4.4 KitKat-powered phone packs a number of Sony's apps and services. Present here are Battery STAMINA Mode, Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited, and Walkman and Movies. Sony has also loaded a variety of options and settings to help users get more from the camera.

Pricing was not announced for the Xperia M2 Aqua, but we should expect more details to surface in the coming weeks.
